Orthotics are specially designed devices that are worn inside the shoe to control abnormal foot function and/or accommodate painful areas of the foot. Orthotics are usually made from rigid materials, especially plastics and carbon-fiber composites and are generally custom made to suite the specific needs of the person, however off the shelf orthotics are equally effective if there is no major abnormality of the foot and are more cost effective. A detailed clinical examination by your podiatrist or physiotherapist is needed for the prescription of orthotics.
Common conditions treated by orthotics are low back, hip and knee pain, shin splints, Achilles tendinopathy, post knee or hip replacement ,trauma including stress fractures, muscle/tendon/ligament tears and strains, ankle sprains and fractures, bunions, osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Leg length differences and diabetes.Currently there are more than 10 different types of orthotics to choose from for various conditions and can suite most kinds of footwear.
